Advice needed: Do I need shared buildings insurance

Hi all,

Am at a bit of a loss with this one, and would really appreciate some advice:
- My wife a I own the Leasehold and Freehold of a flat in a terraced house that was converted into two flats at some point in the distant past

- When we moved in in 2021, we had a joint buildings insurance policy with our upstairs neighbour, which worked fine and covered the whole building - my understanding was this was a good arrangement, since we are jointly responsible for external walls and the roof.

- Annoyingly, a few years ago Zurich told us they were not going to make us a renewal offer after our policy expired - unclear whether this is a general move out of the buildings insurance market, or just didn't want our custom.

- Our upstairs neighbour sorted out a new policy with Direct Line which they were told by the agent they spoke to would cover both their flat and ours.

- Since then, we have moved overseas and rented out our flat.

- I learned over the weekend that the policy taken out by our upstairs neighbour does NOT cover our flat, which is pretty terrifying.

- Calling up insurers today, the combination of half the building being let out and our need for a joint policy to cover the whole building seems to be making this hugely complicated.

My questions:
- Am I right in thinking that a joint policy is the way to go, or would be better off simplifying by just getting individual coverage for each flat and claiming on the policy depending on which flat is most affected by damage?

- If a joint policy is the way to go, does anyone have any suggestions for which company might offer this? Direct Line are the ones who shafted us with the policy that only covers upstairs, and Virgin are saying that it's a highly specialist job which needs referring to another team

Any advice would be greatly appreciated
