How to trace energy suppliers?

My brother and I inherited a flat when my mum died in 2021. It was rented out at the time.

Relations broke down with the tenant in 2024 and they moved out in November.

How can I find who supplies any services to the flat? I’m worried about the gas and electricity in particular.

There doesn’t appear to be a phone line in.

There has been no correspondence to the flat about services but I’ve learned through the council tax that doesn’t mean it is not a problem!

try this using the postcode it usually comes up with last known supplier.

I had to do this for my office because for some reason theres 3 number 91 in the street and none of them were showing as ours...... despite our address being the ACTUAL 91🤣🤣🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷🤷

Just try to sign up with someone new. They'll do it all.

Will they ask who the current supplier is?

It doesnt realy matter who supplies it currently, just phone up a new supplier, give them the information and set up a new account. You should have done this in November but now is better than later, as eventualy someone will want to come and cap it. Getting energy re-energised is expencive.

You're on 6 months of it being empty? You selling or whats the deal? Thats a long time to leave a property vacant.

Sounds like siblings dealing with being "accidental" landlords. Things don't tend to be run efficiently. Maybe this is the window to sell up.

Yeah it’s for sale at present and under offer in a chain.

Do you have any photos of the meters when then moved out? If not, don't worry, the new providor can average it out from a date you pick. You'll get a bill from when you take "ownership". Any previous will be owed by the tenants.

Thanks. Unfortunately I only have meter readings from fairly recently. The tenant is incommunicado now so hopefully there isn’t anything outstanding pre-November.

You may as well assume they did skip on finishing off those accounts properly, most do, not even the "bad" ones!

FYI this is for everything once you're an adult.
