Random question. Do tenants who rent a furnished apartment typically expect a hoover to be available? My current tenant has one, but she might move out soon. I’m about to sell a spare hoover and asking in case it’s worth keeping it for potential future tenants.
I assume you mean hoover? Like a vacuum cleaner? Not usually supplied by a landlord in my experience as a tenant.
My hovercraft is full of eels
Kérlek, simogasd meg a fenekem.
Up to you, but be aware any portable electrical appliances you provide are then your responsibility, including alternatives when they break and inspecting them to ensure they are safe to use…not worth the hassle in my opinion unless you ‘gift’ it to a tenant who needs it
that’s a good point, cheers
No worries, if you’re looking to sell then I’ll just belt and braces, and hopefully something you already know…if you sell as an individual human (not as a business) to another individual human then there are no consumer rights implied (so no refunds repairs replacements etc), it’s ‘sold as seen’, just stick to the facts when advertising it
This is what we do. Tenant asks for a microwave. We say no in writing and then turn up with a microwave for them and make it clear it's theirs to keep.
Did you already have the microwave?
Honestly those little things help and build trust, in my previous place after an inspection my landlord said “I noticed you don’t have a toaster, got one spare if you want to put it to use” all implied it was a gift, did mean I had to awkwardly explain that I just don’t eat bread or bread byproducts so had no need…same landlord that trusted me to use a bedroom as a woodworking space because I reassured him it was a hobby and I cared about those around me
I think we did already have the microwave. We've also bought other things though like a dehumidifier.
No, a hoover is never provided.
It’s not a furnishing, it’s a small appliance.
It’s not something I usually supply
Some do and some don't, but my rule of thumb is that you should always make it easy for tenants to do what you want them to do (i.e. keep it clean) especially when you're renting to students and young professionals.
As a past tenant i never felt happy using the provided hoover if there was one. No clue what theyve been used on!
Think about it... 🤢
I have Dyson, should be alright
Personally I wouldn’t expect a hovercraft or any other form of spontaneous levitation when renting
I supply vacuum cleaners, mops/buckets
At least that way I know there’s a chance the tenants will actually use them
Vacuums I supply tend to be shark or Dyson - come with a 5 year guarantee. Tenant takes on responsibility of replacing belts if needed and I specify that.
Never had an issue and is on inventory list as it is.
No, it’s called a Henry x
A clean tenant will own their own vacuum cleaner. Might be worth keeping your Hoover in a cupboard though, just in case.
Red flag if they don't have their own.
people have different situations.. maybe they just arrived to the city..
Who arrives in a new city without a vacuum cleaner? Who I ask? Maybe in a crazy far off place, but certainly nobody in the civilised world!
Every furnished flat I’ve rented has had a vacuum cleaner.
No but we have before.
No
When I used to supply them nobody would replace the bags so quickly became useless. Tried bagless with a Dyson service plan, not only did I then become responsible for cleaning the filters but also emptying the canister
Consider your actual cost to supply, clean, service, pay test and replace. Add profit margin and it will make an easy argument that rent is £xx less per month and to spend that on a cleaner if they don't want to buy a vacuum cleaner
Yes
You will have to get any electrical equipment you provide tested etc - PAT test l think
If a tenant wanted one I’d rent it.
In a HMO.yes but not in an unfurnished house on a single tenancy.
No - in a furnished property you only expect the furniture. Curtains and white goods are a good bonus but not guaranteed.
Thanks everyone, this is enough sentiment for me to make a decision. I don’t need more feedback, cheers.
I generally do provide one. It's true that if it breaks them you need to replace it, but for me , the risk of having to replace it with an inexpensive hoover is totally worth it. I rent to students and I want them to have the basic cleaning tools to keep the place tidy.
No
You could float the idea
