Seems a bit steep.

Yes, no, maybe - if it’s a massive room then no, if it’s a broom cupboard then yes.

It’s probably fine given plastering is a skill but get some other quotes.

Yes sounds steep. How many days work is that?

How big is the room? How awkward is the shape? How many doors, windows, build in units? Does it include skirting and architraves etc, and are they already on or being replaced?

Carpet down that needs to be protected? Furniture in the room? Does it include the ceiling?

There's plenty of things that could double or triple the complexity of a job (and therefore the cost), before you even consider the size. But size also matters :)

For example, if you're having existing woodwork remaining and painting, then someone could spend a day or two just sanding and prepping all of that, then they have to plaster without ruining your carpet, so have to be extra careful, then knock off for a few days whilst the plaster cures, then come back, re-mask everything, blah blah blah...£2k starts to sound like a bit of a bargain.

If it's a building site and you're going to add all the woodwork yourself after they've skimmed and painted, with nothing on the floor to worry about, it could literally take half the time.

I had a room around 5.5M by 4m and was charged 750 for plastering including materials and luckily my dads a painter so I helped him on that part of the works. But I would imagine about £1k-£1.1.

It depends? Most trades around me are : Decorators 180-200 a day General builder, chippy, plasterers, electricians 200-300 a day.

Possible scopes:

  1. How much prep is required. Does it need stripping back to bare brick and re render, or dry lining? Includes ceilings? Is it a funny shape? any built in cupboards to go round? Wallpaper stripping, filling. This could anything from 1/2 a day to a 3 days. so £100-£750 labour, plus taking away anything from 1/2 bag of waste to 20 bags... Trade waste is £3.20 bag at our tip. =£64

and if it will be messy you'll spend money on carpet protectors, extra dust sheets etc etc. £100

  1. Re render walls, and board ceilings? 2-3 days. £500-£750 labour £250 materials

  2. Any first fix electricals? Are you moving/adding sockets? Lights? £100-£400

  3. Skimming a room is 1-2 days depending on complexity £250 -£500 +100 materials

  4. Re attach skirting boards and architraves?? a day £250 +£150 materials for new wood.

  5. painting including woodwork 2-3 days £400-600 +100 materials

  6. 2nd fix electrics £200

At its simplest, with little prep and leaving the old woodwork on, the room could be prepped and skimmed in 2 days =£500 +£100 materials, and decorated in 2 days =£400+100 materials So minimum £1100

At its most involved and complex with all the choices above its getting close to 5K.
