Lockable Smart Thermostat

What Smart Thermostats are lockable either on the device or on an app?

Have 2 lodgers, 1 (29m) no issue, 2nd one (16m apprentice) had an issue with their mother finding it acceptable to put wet washing on every radiator and cranking the heating right up on the downstairs thermostat and TRVs. When house has been averaging 20c per day for past few weeks.

Not looking for the dedicated landlord thermostat thing, had one of those as a tenant myself was awful. England.

Nest and hive both have locks, though the hive one is pretty easy to bypass

Is the Nest a software lock and the hive the physical engaged child lock?

Both are software.

But Nest has a pin or app unlock, hive can be unlocked by anyone who can Google the button combination.

I have a seven year old who could bypass the hive lock. The screen basically tells you to press and hold this for 3 seconds. You can link hive to Alexa. You don’t need a physical Alexa device, Alexa on a phone will suffice. You can then create multiple routines in Alexa to turn the heating down every 5 minutes. In the event someone cranks it up, Alexa will just over ride it every 5 minutes and turn it back down. I’m sure there will be other ways to do similar.

It might be worth a call to the hive support line and see if they offer any custom alterations to the thermostat for landlords.

What did the mother say when you spoke to her about this?

She left before I could say anything. She seems to be an enabler and given son too much freedom. Having been away for 4/5 days and lodger leaving dirty food covered plates and bowls in cupboard, rather than dropping off, mother, lodger and younger sister came in, made a load of noise and mess, ordered a takeaway and then smashed the heating.

I'm going to age discriminate here. What did you expect getting a 16 year old as a lodger? That's less of an enabling parent and more that you've just got a 16 year old kid.

We have the Honeywell system and it's not exactly lockable but you can control the temp from your phone. perhaps set up schedule to turn it down every hour? I have heard it's also lockable but never used it myself

You're basically acting as a pseudo parent for the 16m. Tell them these are the house rules and if you don't like it then they can find another place.

You're trying to circumvent addressing the underlying problem.

Otherwise go for a Hive style thermostat.

Tado is what you want. Unlike Nest, it has TRVs. TRVs can be locked in the app. The central thermostat in the app doesn't technically have the child lock feature, but practically it does in that you have the option for when someone manually changes the temperature on the central thermostat - you can do it on a timer, so that their change would only last for one minute before reverting back to your tado schedule.

Nest. You set the maximum and minmum levels. The tenant can also turn up and down the heating, when they want, but within your range

If they are away it will also turn the heating off.

The tenants might need a dryer.
