Updating post from Reddit.
I lived in Towerworks, a Build to Rent apartment in Leeds, and had a cat during my stay. I completed the application for Pet Lisence for the apartment before moving in, and was not provided with any information on additional pet fees to be submitted. Now I have moved out. However, I received a email this morning from the apartment that a so-called Pet Fee of more than £500 should be paid during my stay. May I ask if this is reasonable? Because I have never seen any hint of relevant fees in the contract, and if I need to pay this fee, I think I should have been asked to submit it at the very beginning which also needs to be added into my rent. Why did the aprtment inexplicably send me a payment price without any details after my rent-out?
Just say your cat is refusing to pay
Thanks for the early morning laugh :-)
I mean you asked for a cat, can they prove you ever actually had one? No probably not
Doesn't even matter if they can prove he had a herd of cats living there. What matters is if they can prove OP signed anything agreeing to any sort of fee.
Tell them you applied with the intention of getting a pet but never got around to it. Do they have any proof that you had a pet other than the application?
Tell them nothing, simply because OP doesn't have to waste a second more on them unless they signed something.
If you have your deposit back ghost em.
So basic contracting rule applies
IF anywhere in tenant agreement or pet application doc it says -fee applies
You owe them money
IF it does not reference a fee ANYWHERE -be very thorough before you shout
Respond with
“Please provide documented evidence of notice or contract I agreed to (signed) where a pet charge is clearly laid out?
Pay nothing & wait on response!
They cannot decide to charge random sums of money for things you don’t have agreed after tenancy is over!
I think such fees are illegal?
They can ask you pay additional rent for the pet. Back dating it i'm not sure about?
If it's on the licence or your tenancy agreement, then it's potentially rent arrears they are owed.
Really comes down to what this money is for and where in your contract it is provided for. Ask them to point you in the direction of that if you aren't able to find it
Happy Cake Day 🍰
It all depends whether there's evidence of a cat living there via scratches etc.
Lol no it all depends on whether OP SIGNED anything agreeing to it.
Ah, yes, that makes sense. Thank you.
Never been to a cat owners place that didn't smell of piss and it's expensive to remove the smell
You should have been told the costs from the outset. So this smells for sure, it may be something you signed though that payment after you leave? but that would be a bit abnormal.
